VOX CLAMANTIS

Ron Athey and Carmina Escobar roam the vocality of the mystical body and landscape in a trilogy of ritual vocal recordings exploring mystical landscapes in California’s rich ecology, performed over the course of three days following the moon phases.

"Vox Clamantis'' is a sonic prophecy, a recording project based on the biblical phrase “Vox Clamantis in Deserto" whose literal translation from Latin is "the voice of one crying out in the wilderness”. The metaphor we unearth from this phrase makes our voices the immaterial bridge between the voice of the divine that lives in nature, and the wilderness as the truth and the essence of the human condition that surrenders to the overpowering beauty and harshness of the environment.

Part I was recorded during a Full Moon in the desert of Joshua Tree. Part II was recorded during a Full Moon at Mono Lake in May 2021. Part III will be recorded at a coastal forest in the Bay Area in the summer of 2022.
